Yue Opera Town: Combination of Cultural
Experience, Travel and Recreation

As a town themed around Yue Opera, Yue Opera Town shows the design mentality for meeting tourists鈥?demand for travel and consumption, presenting the charm of Yue Opera to tourists amid experiences and
interaction and even making them interested in Yue Opera.
The project in Shengzhou broke ground in 2017 summer and the first phase opened on December 30, 2018.
Located in Shijia鈥檃o 鈥?a village in Shengzhou which is the birthplace of Yue Opera, the Yue Opera-themed
tourist city is aimed to show traditional opera and skills and unique philosophy in exploring tourists鈥?demand
and building cultural and recreational experiences and interaction.
The space for performing and content design of the project is closely related to elements of Yue Opera. The
opera building is the major building of the project. Famous opera troupes from many places were invited to the
opening show, presenting classic opera highlights.
From Yue Opera museums, Shengzhou Yue Opera Art School, local civil opera troupes, and opera fan culture
to Yue Opera culture available everywhere, Yue Opera in Shengzhou is a unique landscape amid China鈥檚 opera
development.
How to achieve combination of cultural experience, travel and recreation is undoubtedly an important
objective of all theatres at tourist attractions.
Occupying 3.68 square kilometers, Yue Opera Town鈥檚 first phase has over ten indoor and outdoor performing
facilities. At the opening ceremony, performing groups from home and abroad had connectivity in different
spaces, covering opera, Chinese folk art forms, music and dance. For example, a troupe from Australia made an
aerial swing dance show at the plaza at the entrance of the park, attracted a lot of tourists.
Focusing on Yue Opera, Yue Opera Town designs multiple functions of cultural tourism and what it shows is
the founder鈥檚 passion for traditional culture and skills. It hopes to make audiences who are interested in Yue
Opera have fun on their trip and make tourists who are not familiar with Yue Opera have some interest in the
traditional opera via experiences.
